7 Tips to Improve your Home Comfort for the Holidays

Lisa Lewolt

Make sure your home is ready for the upcoming holiday season. If you plan to spend the holidays quietly at home or with guests, there are ways to maximize your home comfort while saving money on energy. Prepare for another joyous holiday season with our holiday tips and reminders.

Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

With a programmable thermostat, you can conserve energy and keep everyone comfortable. During the night, keep the thermostat set to a lower temperature so people will be comfortable under blankets, and raise the temperature when everyone gets up in the morning. Keep in mind that when you have guests in your home, body heat is generated more quickly. Depending on the level of activity and number of people in your house, you may want to set your thermostat lower than usual.

Close the Damper After Use

Close the damper in your chimney if you aren’t using your fireplace. An open damper will allow warm air to escape and cold air to enter, resulting in a drafty atmosphere in your home.

Don’t Use Portable Heaters

Unattended portable heating units can be dangerous if not used properly. There might be an issue with your home heating system if some rooms in your house seem colder than others. It is possible that your home has an imbalance in its air flow or that it may benefit from a zoning system.

Let the Sunlight in and Dress for the Season

Sunlight is a free source of heat, so take advantage of it. You can let the warmth of the sun into your home by opening the blinds or curtains when the sun is shining in your windows. You can save on energy costs by getting in the habit of using your furnace less. As an extra bonus, the sunlight will also reduce cabin fever and boost everyone’s mood. If you have guests coming, you might want to remind them to dress warmly. You won’t have to crank up your thermostat to compensate for those who are underdressed if everyone knows and plans to dress for cooler weather.

Encapsulation and/or Removal of Asbestos

Get a decent check – make sure you don’t expose your family at home to dangerous partials like asbestos.  Asbestos is a natural mineral made of microscopic fibers. The fibers are usually white and so thin that they are practically invisible. Since asbestos is such an excellent insulator, it is typically found in homes equipped only with a heating system. It’s usually found in the attic and wall insulation. It was first discovered as a danger when asbestos was combined with air conditioning. It is only possible to eliminate asbestos through abatement. By removing asbestos, indoor air will be free from asbestos fibers. Asbestos removal is a unique and particularly challenging project that shouldn’t be undertaken by the homeowner. To avoid exposure to asbestos, it is best to use a certified asbestos abatement contractor rather than doing it yourself. Pacific Aire is certified to remove asbestos.

Make Sure Your Registers and Vents are Free and Clear

Make sure your curtains and/or furniture aren’t blocking your heating registers in any way. If you are hosting guests, make sure their suitcases, coats, and other belongings are kept away from the vents and registers. In order to compensate for an imbalance in air supply, your furnace or heat pump will have to work harder.

Install an Air Purification System

Today, contaminated air remains our greatest threat. It is linked to a wide variety of adverse health effects like respiratory illnesses. The disturbing truth is that the air we breathe right inside our homes proves to be up to 5x more polluted than the air outside. Your air conditioning, heating, and filtration system is a crucial part of keeping your home safe from life-threatening organisms! Pacific Aire installs and maintains air scrubbers to reduce particulate matter, odors, and organisms in the air. We offer no-cost estimates and Same-Day installation for Air Scrubbers. Our air purification system is a revolutionary new system designed to eliminate indoor air quality risks.

Bonus Tip: Ensure Maximum Comfort with a Furnace Tune-Up

Schedule your annual furnace maintenance if you haven’t already. There is nothing worse than an unexpected furnace failure, especially when entertaining guests. Whenever you need your furnace to work efficiently, a trained technician can inspect and tune it up to ensure it is running at its best. When units are well maintained, they run more efficiently, use less power, and consume less energy.

A reliable heating system is especially important during the holidays to keep you warm and comfortable. Make sure you and your guests have a fun holiday by following these tips.
