How HVAC Zoning Can Improve Your Home Comfort

Ned Thetech

Have you ever noticed one side of your home is hotter or colder?

Maybe burning hot upstairs, and freezing cold downstairs.

These issues can be fixed by something called ‘Zoning’. Let’s discuss Zoning!

Most thermostats only sense temperature in one location, usually your hallway or master bedroom sets the temperature for the entire home.

Zoning is the ability to have multiple climate zones in your home running on the same HVAC equipment.

Imagine if you only had one light switch for every light in your home? Would that be the right solution for you? Zoning keeps air only where you call for it, just like your light switches only turn on specific lights.

How is this done?

Well, this is done through the use of electronic airflow dampers and separate thermostats. Each climate zone is ducted to an electronic volume control damper. A damper is a movable plate, located inside the ductwork, that regulates airflow and redirects it to specific areas of the home.

Next, there is the zoning board. The zoning board acts as the brains of the operation, relaying the signal from each thermostat to each zone damper and then to the HVAC equipment. This maximizes comfort and efficiency. You will no longer waste energy heating or cooling a section of your home no one is using.

Zoning was designed for comfort! And is ideal for homes with large temperature swings, different temperature demands, and multi-story homes.

With increased efficiency comes increased life for your system. By reducing the temperature in certain unused parts of your home, it will reduce the overall draw on the system. This results in less stress and wear and tear, which in turn, extends the life of the system.

Keep in mind, just because the zoned system reduces wear and tear, it does not mean you can avoid your system’s regular maintenance.

Zoning can be added to the equipment already in your home or included in a brand-new heating and cooling system. If it is time to update your ductwork or equipment, ask one of our friendly comfort advisors about improving your home’s comfort with zoning.
