5 Ways To Protect Your Pets From Heat Waves and Wacky Weather

On hot days, home and pet owners have looked for ways to combat this heat wave that has been affecting not only humans, but also their furry best friends. Officials advised people to be wary of the rising temperatures that took place in the past season and gave ideas on how to keep cool during the hot weather.

It’s not just people like us who need to be safe from heat and humidity. Our adorable pets as well, are in danger of heat exhaustion or heat stroke in hot weather. So how can you keep your pet safe from heat waves? Here are five things you can do to keep your pets safe from this sweltering  climate.

Ensure your pets get adequate hydration

Drinking water is important especially when the temperature is high. Excessive heat in your home can cause illness and discomfort, not just for you, but for your pets too. Ensure they get adequate hydration  in order to be safe from the effects of the heat. Give them enough water to drink throughout the day, whether they are indoors or outside  your home.

Have a reliable and working HVAC system

To make not only yourself, but your bundle of joys comfortable, make sure your air conditioning system is working properly. Check and change your HVAC air filters periodically. Remember to keep your pet comfortable even if you’re not at home. Adjust your smart and programmable thermostat. It’s not only cost effective, but it’s for energy efficiency too. The ideal temperature at home for pets is around 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit. The size of the animal and the amount of fur on their body will affect how hot it feels to them. They also have a higher body temperature so having a pet friendly thermostat should be considered for them to stay cool.

Buy an Air Purifier

To minimize the amount of pet dander at home, vacuum at least once a week. Having pets at home is more challenging for your indoor air quality due to their fur and pet dander. That’s why it’s important to consider getting an air purifier to keep your indoor air clean. It will eliminate air pollutants, including dust and pollen in your home. Air Scrubbers can remove 99.99% of dangerous air  contaminants so you can breathe cleanly and easily.

Get proper pet grooming

This will keep your well loved-pets feeling fresh and comfortable. Bathe them regularly to keep them cool and clean. Brush their fur coat to remove excess hair and remove dirt. It also helps with dematting fur and keeps it tangle-free. Always throw out their excess fur so it will not clog your air conditioning filters. Just as you observe your own personal hygiene, do the same thing with your furry friend by caring for their grooming.

Minimize outdoor activities during hot days

Taking a walk with your pet or engaging with them is a form of exercise that’s helpful for their health, especially for your cats and dogs. This will keep their body and mind active and healthy. During hot weather days, it’s best to minimize your outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day. Exercise in the early morning or in the evening hours. You can also keep them active by doing simple indoor activities such as playing fetch down the hallways  or searching for objects around the house. Make sure to keep your AC unit on to keep them cool while they are on exercise mode.
